The toll of coronavirus on global supply chains
As we pass what has been the deadliest day yet for coronavirus in China, we take a look at the economic toll it is taking on global supply chains.
As China rose to become the workshop of the world, its rise has created numerous benefits, from lifting hundreds of millions out of poverty, to low inflation in many Western economies, to what is now a growing consumer market for exporters. However, the efficiency of its economy has meant a growing reliance on it for supply chains that often don’t have a huge amount of slack.
This has been tested over the last two years by the ongoing trade war, but coronavirus represents a more immediate threat, with a prolonged Lunar New Year holiday and shutdowns of factories and even entire cities creating huge disruption.
