Aldi officially opened a new £64m distribution centre in the Midlands this February, which will help to supply more than 80 stores.

The 600,000-square-foot facility is situated Sawley, in Derbyshire, which puts it around 40 miles from both Birmingham and Sheffield.

The opening marks the company's 11th distribution centre in the UK and will serve in excess of 80 stores. It will employ more than 400 people

The facility is part a £1bn investment drive in 2019 and 2020, which is being put towards new stores, store upgrades and improving its distribution capabilities. Aldi is now targeting 1,200 in the UK by the end of 2025.

Giles Hurley, chief executive of Aldi UK & IRL, said: "Our new Sawley distribution centre significantly increases our capacity and allows us to open even more stores across the East Midlands to cater for the growing number of shoppers switching to Aldi.

"Although some of our newest and most popular stores are situated in the East Midlands, there are still many towns and cities where we have a limited presence or none at all. This is something that we are looking to address in the coming years."
